RE: Hate those annoying telemarketer phone calls?

The Do Not Call list has worked well for us. It doesn't, however, stop calls from companies you have done business with at some time in the past. Either way we now only get rare sales calls. Now if we can do something about the junk mail....

RE: Camping World Sales Closed

I drive by the Camping World Snellville, Georgia location everyday on the way to work. One morning there were campers on the lot, that afternoon, the lot was bare. I can't tell if the store is still open though as most businesses in that area haven't yet opened when I drive by in the am and are closed for the night when I am on my way home (this tells me I work too many hours). I'm a little annoyed that I just sent in the renewal for my Presidents Club membership last month. I wouldn't have done this if I knew they were closing up shop....

RE: Yup, best mod on my Coleman/Fleetwood so far

Why do they rivet that thing on there anyway. The plastic cover on ours broke long ago and now the spring rubs the door when it closes. I think I will follow your lead and drill it out.

RE: The Economy & Bail Out Options

Looks like the stock market is already correcting itself despite the lack of a government band-aid. As for the banks, a correction was overdue. WaMu was picked up by Chase and Wachovia by Citibank, both the result of poor lending practices. The market will correct itself without the taxpayers having to fund the CEO's exit strategies (and personal retirement funds). Dumping more taxpayers money into a broken system won't help. I vote for a wait and see approach. On the other hand, consumers buying up real estate and investing real dollars in other stocks/commodities will give us the boost the economy needs.

RE: Would you have paid?

lets see, the op got the dent out for free and people are saying they would call the police. lets keep the police free for real emergencies. It is an issue of safety! After all, isn't that why we have Police?? If my wife were approached in a parking lot by 2 men demanding money for an unsolicited service, I would expect her to do what ever she had to do to stay safe. Get real folks. We live in a world where we have to assume that these guys, who were obviously trying to take advantage of a lady, could have gotten violent in their demands. I would rather my wife call the police than have the police have to call me...

RE: Southeast Fuel situation

I work in Atlanta and live in nearby Dacula (35 mile commute). I pass about 15 gas stations on my way into work. For the last 2 weeks, on the average commute, I see maybe 2 or 3 stations with gas. That changes from am to pm. While it is usually not a problem finding gas if you are willing to search, the long lines and uncertainty in finding a station before you burn through the rest of your tank will cause a lot of stress. Some have waited up to 2 hours only to find the station out of gas when they finally reach the pump. Hoarders have made things worse. The other day, I saw some idiot filling a cooler in his trunk with gas!!! I heard problems are just as bad in Athens, about 1 hour east of Atlanta. My brother drove up from Florida last weekend and reported no problem finding gas until he got to within 60 miles of Atlanta. If you are traveling through the area, fill up well outside Atlanta and don't plan on finding anything near the interstate once you reach the city. They tell us this may last another couple of weeks.

RE: What’s up with bicyclists riding the white line?!? (rant)

Wow The animosity here is amazing. I am disappointed by the number of RVers that think the road belongs to them (I sure they are the only tax payers afterall). In most states, cyclists have just as much right to the road as motorcycles, scooters, cars, trucks, and yes, RVs. If a cyclist breaks the law, he can be ticketed just like a motorist. A cyclist should stay as far to the right as possible but that does NOT mean he/she has to dodge glass, debris, or hazards just to convenience a motorist that is in a hurry. Some states are considering laws that require motorists to give cyclists at least 4 feet when passing. That will require the motorists to change lanes just as they would for another vehicle. I for one support this change. And before y'all label all cyclists as knuckleheads and dimwits, maybe you should all look in a mirror. Proud to be a Camper, Roadie, and Mountain Bicyclist

RE: Dauphin Island Campground in AL

Our camping group usually camps at Lake Lanier every year. Since the COE continues to drain that lake at an astounding rate, and it would take five or more years of steady rain to get near normal levels, we are looking for another place to vacation for a week this summer. We found this campground and it seems interesting. Can anyone provide us with some specific information? Pros/Cons? There will be five to six families with the adults ranging in ages from 30 something to 60 something. And 10-12 kids ranging in ages from 3 to 18. Thanks for the help. Fourcamping Sorry to dig up a dead post but I'm just curious if you stayed at Dauphin Island. I came across this thread while trying to find info on the campground. The responses didn't make it sound too good. The wife and I are looking for somewhere quiet for a few days this fall. We live in the hustle and bustle of Atlanta. We have no kids, don't care about bars or restaraunts, and don't need putt putt. Our idea of relaxing is a bottle of wine, a couple of lawn chairs, and a good book. Comments from anyone about Dauphin island would be appreciated.

RE: Anyone hitching/unhitching pups themselves?

Another vote for the backup camera. My Niagara is too heavy to move any significant distance, but with the camera, i can usually get it in one try (once I got used to the field of depth). On really uneven ground, I still have a little trouble judging the height though. This just means I have to get close then raise the tongue the appropriate height and allow for the slight roll when I put the parking brake on in the tow vehicle.

RE: My 'progressive' city...........gotta love these morons.....

This is not a new idea. Apparently some parts of Europe and Isreal already do this... The Germans consider DNA testing to match poop to pooch By Reinhard Kargl Posted 07.19.2005 at 4:00 pm 0 Comments When nature calls, canines tend to disregard the law, and their owners often fail to deal with the messy aftermath. The situation is particularly dire in Germany, where an estimated three million pounds of “Hundekot” are deposited daily on public property. Now cutting-edge forensics makes it possible to trace the offending matter back to its source. A citizen commission in Dresden, Germany, has overwhelmingly recommended a scheme in which DNA samples would be collected from all dogs when their annual license came up for renewal. Within one year, a database of Dresden’s registered 12,500 canine residents would be complete. Sanitation workers would carry feces-sample kits and submit evidence to a forensics laboratory, where scientists could easily match doo to dog. The dog’s owner would then be promptly fined up to $600. Dresden’s commission targeted a break-even point at about seven months. Afterward the city stands to turn a profit.

RE: Plumbing Leak

What does the plumbing look like? If I had to guess, it is likely to be PEX (cross linked polyethylene) tubing. This type of plumbing is commonly used as it is more flexible and somewhat freeze resistant. It can be joined using special clamps (the clamping tool is expensive but can be rented) or by using compression fittings available at larger hardware stores. I doubt hose clamps would work on this type of tubing. You can buy sections at Home Depot and Lowes along with compression fittings to repair any breaks. I hear that Shark Fittings are pretty easy to use and are leak proof. Of course, I am just guessing that it is PEX since that is used in so many campers.

RE: hoohing up to cable tv

Can't stress enough to take along some male-male connectors. The last CG we stayed in had a 3' section of RG6 sticking up out of the ground with a female connector on the end. A male-male connector was required to attach the camper cable to this "hookup".

Antenna on a pop-up

Has anyone mounted an antenna on their pop-up? I am looking at the Hide-a-way antenna from Winegard but don't know if it is any good. Yes, I know most of us go camping to get away from the TV but we like to catch the news and weather. Any comments? (BTW, the tv already has a digital tuner so there is no need addressing the digital vs analog issue.)

RE: wingard hide a way antenna

Thanks for the responses. The tv in the camper is new and has a digital tuner so I am not worried about that. I was just wondering if the hide a way antenna was any good, and if I would need a signal booster or amp. David

wingard hide a way antenna

Anyone have experience with the Winegard Hide-a-way antenna? We are interested in getting some local news channels when camping but "rabbit ears" we currently use don't work well with all the metal walls around them.

RE: Adding an electric lift to a PUP?

Your standard electric winches all do have manual operating. The main problem folks have is not remembering to recharge the battery, as many roofs put enough torque on the winch that it uses more amps than the converter can supply. That's why they are connected directly to the battery with it's own circuit. How right you are! After a recent trip to Florida (9hr drive), we found our camper battery drained due to a bad 12 v connection with the tow vehicle. The auto lift would not work even when plugged into shore power (the converter was sending 14 v to recharge the battery but the amperage couldn't run the motor). One important note, don't forget to disconnect the power (even if the battery is almost dead) to the lift motor if cranking up by hand.

RE: What is the big benefit of the highwall models?

Went from tent camping to an 08 Niagara. For us it was like going from Motel 6 to the Marriott. We love the residential height counters, the ceramic toilet with full hookup, the hard wall shower, the larger fridge, microwave, heater, a/c,....... It all comes down to what features are important to you. If you have the option of standing or stooping, why would you pick the later.

RE: electrical questions 08' Niagara

That's what I love about this forum. No matter the problem, someone else has dealt with it. Interesting that a couple of Niagaras have had this issue.... daveskis, did you end up replacing your battery? I suspect the generic no-name one I got from Peco (a "free" add-on) is likely poor quality. David

RE: Lift tubes are weering tent material on Utah

I watched the dealer prep guy throw away those little "cards" at each post saying "you don't need these". At the time, I didn't think anything about it. After seeing the tenting get pinched, I cut out 4 pieces of clear flexible plastic about 4x6 inches and placed them between the tent and posts where they seem to stay without being fixed in place. Since they are clear, they are almost invisible. Works great. David

electrical questions 08' Niagara

Any opinions on this???? The fridge was pre-cooled with the camper plugged into shore power (The camper stays plugged in while in storage). When we hooked up the tow vehicle, the fridge was switched to battery for the trip. When we arrived at the campground eight hours later, the power lift would not work. After hand cranking up the camper, we noticed the fridge was warm. Voltage on the battery (no load) was 13.3 volts. Once we connected back to shore power, everything was back to normal. After 3 days in the campground, we disconnected from shore power and tried the power lift again. This time, it worked fine. The fridge was switched to battery again for the trip since the battery seemed to have recharged. This time, the fridge appeared to work on 12 v as long as the tow vehicle was connected and the engine on. On arriving home, we disconnected the TV and again found that the camper battery could not power the fridge, power lift or even the propane detector, which was beeping low battery. Why is the battery discharging so quickly (8 hour trip with pre-cooled fridge pulling ~2 amphours)? Why is the battery charging on shore power but not when plugged into the tow vehicle? Any help appreciated David
